HMRC deals with the tax affairs of the UK’s 2,500 wealthiest taxpayers in its specialist High Net Worth Unit (HNWU): staffed by highly experienced and dedicated tax inspectors, accountants, lawyers and other specialists.

Over 400 tax officers oversee the tax affairs of the UK's 2,500 richest people.  These so-called High Net Worth Individuals (HiNWi’s) are selected by HMRC, partly using publically available data, as they are believed to have wealth in excess of £10,000,000.

Taxpayers whose affairs are dealt with by the HNWU will have received so-called "welcome letters" informing them that their tax affairs will be dealt with there.
