Budget News: Getting Mardy with Cost Del Tax Dodgers

The UK is to implement the Mutual Assistance Recovery Directive (MARD) from 1 January 2012.  EU member states can provide each other with assistance in recovering tax debts, including the service of documents and exchanging information. The new MARD will cover all entities established and persons residing in the EU.  It will make it easier for the UK’s taxman to collect debts where people skip the country: e.g. to the Mediterranean beach resorts.  It is most likely to be used by HMRC in the most serious and largest cases, such as Civil Investigation of Fraud tax investigations or HMRC Specialist Investigation unit tax enquiries.
