Coventry Accountant Imprisoned for Tax fraud

A Coventry based accountant faked his clients’ tax returns and fiddled his own, has been given a 2 year jail sentence.

From January to August 2012 Akeel Ahmed Mirza, (aged 27) altered his clients’ company tax returns , in order to make false repayment claims of over £140,000 of tax: which he then kept for himself. He also sent HM Revenue and Customs incorrect Self Assessment tax returns for his own business: claiming tax refunds of £46,500 – by falsely claiming his business had made large trading losses.

Mirza was arrested by HMRC tax investigators at his home on 23 August 2012; and was subsequently charged with 5 counts of Fraud by False Representation, and 1 count of Cheating the Public Revenue.  He was sentenced today at Warwickshire Justice Centre.
