The boss of a Wakefield recruitment business has been jailed for 27 months after being found guilty of a £470,000 VAT fraud.
Shaun Clark, aged 58, of Tingley, Wakefield, ran two recruitment agencies: Maxim Healthcare Ltd and Iron Bridge (Yorkshire) Ltd from an address at Bond Street, Wakefield – despite being disqualified as a company director for five years in 2009. He then applied to register another company for VAT at the same address: provoking the interest of HMRC tax investigators. The tax inspectors discovered that Iron Bridge (Yorkshire) Ltd charged customers VAT but had never submitted a VAT return; occasionally using the details of Maxim Healthcare Ltd on invoices. The investigating officers also found that Maxim Healthcare Ltd had stopped filing VAT returns from April 2014 but carried on charging VAT to customers: and not paying it over to HMRC.
Clark admitted VAT fraud and running a business whilst disqualified at Leeds Crown Court this summer. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison on 14 September 2018. Proceedings are now underway to recover the defrauded money.
