Tax Taskforce Targets Tax returns in South East

Self-Assessment tax cheats in London and the South East will be targeted by a new HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Tax Taskforce, launched today.

The taxman says: “The taskforce will put the spotlight on people abusing the Self Assessment system fraudulently to claim back money they are not entitled to. It is expected to recover £6 million and prevent future fraudulent repayments being claimed.  Up to 400 people will be targeted by this taskforce.  If you defraud tax or evade tax, we can and will track you down. You will face not only a heavy fine, but possibly a criminal prosecution as well”.

Tax Taskforces are specialist teams that undertake intensive bursts of tax compliance activity in specific high risk sectors and locations.  Other taskforces launched today will tackle: tax evasion in Northern Ireland; the jewellery trade in Birmingham and the Midlands; and fast food outlets in East Anglia.  Since their launch in May 2011 HMRC has created 35 taskforces.  HMRC says it’s on course to collect more than £50 million as a result of taskforces launched in 2011-12, and it expects to collect over £90 million from this year’s taskforces.

What does this mean for me?

Taskforces are primarily aiming for a short, sharp burst of current compliance activity designed at bringing in extra revenue quickly.  In other words they are civil investigations.  But, HMRC’s prosecution policy does allow them to prosecute if they choose.
