Established in 2009, 400 tax officers oversee the tax affairs of the UK's richest High Net Worth Individuals (HINWi’s).  HINWi’s are selected by HMRC, partly using publically available data to identify individuals with wealth in excess of £20,000,000.

The high staffing ratios and the complexity of most HINWi’s financial affairs mean that a substantial number will receive an HMRC Enquiry most years.
