Brummie Tax Advisor Jailed for his own Tax Fraud

A self-employed tax advisor from Birmingham was jailed for 18 months at Worcester Crown Court last week, for Cheating the Public Revenue out of £400,000 – in a VAT and income tax fraud.

HM Revenue and Customs’ tax inspectors discovered that David Douglass, aged 45, of Hollywood in Birmingham, had failed to declare his income of more than £1 million from his business as a tax adviser for 13 years.  Douglass, a regulated financial adviser, specialised in investment portfolios and pensions.

His Honour Judge Pearce-Higgins QC criticised Douglass’ “cavalier attitude” and sentenced him to 18 months in jail.

HMRC is now taking confiscation action to retrieve the proceeds of this crime. HMRC’s Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation said:  “We are working relentlessly to combat those involved in tax evasion and fraud and bring them before the courts.”
