A Leicestershire based former magistrate and his brother, who were both convicted of tax fraud and sent to prison in 2015, and have been ordered to repay a total of £524,000 – or spend another two years in prison.
Loughborough based taxi boss and former magistrate Mr Zaher Somani (aged 60, of Quorn) had been imprisoned for tax fraud and money laundering in 2015. A HM Revenue and Customs investigation proved he had lied about his income and had hidden profits of both A1 Taxis and Charnwood Taxis in offshore bank accounts, and had bought properties in Canada, Turkey and Morocco. His brother Pyarali Somani (aged 64 of Loughborough), and other family members, were also sentenced in 2015 for their part in the tax dodging conspiracy.
As well as achieving the conviction for tax fraud, HMRC also took Confiscation Order proceedings to recover the lost tax – using the Proceeds Of Crime Act. Nottingham Crown Court has ordered the tax fraudsters to make substantial payments. Zaher has to repay £254,375 plus £54,000 costs, and Pyarali must repay £188,812 plus £28,000 costs: a grand total of £524,000.
If these are not paid within 3 months then Zaher and Pyarali will serve so-called further “default sentences” of another two years in jail. If they don’t pay in full, and instead serve the default sentences, the Confiscation Orders are still enforceable. Assets in the convicts’ names will be seized, and any future assets can also be confiscated – until the whole £524,000 has been recovered.
