Death and Taxes: Taxman unearths untaxed money in grave

A businessman planned to leave £140,000 in his aunt’s grave for 20 years to evade tax.

However, proving the old adage correct:  “There’s only 2 things certain in life:  death and taxes”.   HMRC inspectors were tipped off and obtained permission from the priest to recover their £50,000 share.   The Sun reported that the unnamed man was going to leave the money in the grave up to the twenty year time limit for tax investigations.

It was also disclosed in April 2010 that HM Revenue & Customs has paid informers £437,000 in return for tip-offs since 2007.
