Director and ex-wife jailed for tax fraud

The director of a fire safety and security firm and his ex-wife, have been jailed for 3 years each – after being convicted of a £815,000 tax fraud.  HMRC have begun proceedings to recover this money under the Proceeds Of Crime Act.

HMRC investigators discovered that Michael Howard (aged 44) and Donna Howard (aged 43) from Motherwell had charged customers more than £530,000 in VAT; but by using fictitious and de-registered VAT numbers they had not declared this to the taxman.  They also deducted £283,713 PAYE Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions from the employees of MDH Fire and Security Services Limited; but did not pay this to HM Revenue and Customs.

They were found guilty of being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of Value Added Tax. Michael Howard was sentenced to 3 years in prison.  Donna Howard also got a 3 year prison sentence, plus 2 nine month concurrent sentences for other tax evasion offences.
