Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is reportedly being investigated by the taxman in respect of his offshore bank accounts; and may face criminal charges. The News of the World this week reported that Harry is being interviewed by HMRC tax investigators. Redknapp, Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric and Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie were originally arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting. The Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office (RCPO) is said to be reviewing evidence in relation to the trio before deciding whether to bring criminal charges. A final decision is expected within a month.
Many commentators have been speculating that the Revenue tax investigation teams have been looking for a high profile case in order to emphasise the consequences of not taking part in the tax amnesty (the New Disclosure Opportunity and the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility). Both tax amnesties offer a way to come clean about offshore bank accounts, assets and structures and at the same time avoid prosecution and secure lower penalties.
