Kebab and Pizza Man Jailed

The proprietor of a Top Grill Kebab and Pizza House in Warrington has been jailed for 30 months, after the taxman caught him fiddling his takings as part of a £179,000 tax fraud.

Takeaway boss Mehmet Tekagac (aged 43) only declared profits of about £9,000 a year between January 2012 and October 2015.  But an HM Revenue and Customs investigation proved it was much more, after they checked his bank statements and the records of sales made through a website (e.g. Just Eat).

He evaded £31,000 in Corporation Tax, and had also pocketed £98,000 VAT that he’d charged customers.  And he topped it off with fraudulent Tax Credits claims for £50,000. He pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to three counts of tax fraud (totalling £179,154) and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.   HMRC have started Confiscation proceedings to recover the proceeds of crime tax.
