Notts Accountant Jailed for Tax Fraud

A chartered accountant from Nottinghamshire was sentenced to 18 months in prison earlier this month for defrauding HMRC of £153,000 of income tax; following an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs.

Ronald Moncrieff, aged 65 from Carlton in Nottingham: understated his sales; claimed fictitious expenses in his own tax returns (e.g.  for work by sub-contractors, when in fact he never employed any); and also falsified Tax Returns on behalf of his wife and son.

Moncrieff pleaded guilty to charges of completing false tax returns under the Taxes Management Act 1970 and the Theft Act 1968 of £153,000 plus an additional £18,000 in interest.

Moncrieff has repaid £65,000 from the proceeds of his crime – and confiscation proceedings are ongoing to reclaim the remainder.
