Revenue Raids Double

HM Revenue & Customs has dramatically increased the number of raids it makes.  Such swoops to: enter properties; search for evidence; and seize material are an essential part of HMRC’s criminal investigations.  In 2011/12 the taxman raided 499 premises, compared to 196 property searches the previous year:  according to a report in Accountancy Age today.

Also in 2011/12 545 people were charged with tax evasion and excise fraud; with 413 people being convicted: a conviction rate of over 90%.  The taxman claims these criminal cases prevented a loss to the Exchequer of around £940m.  This follows last year’s Government investment of giving HMRC an extra £917m to combat tax evasion and avoidance.

The taxman said: “We have increased the number of properties we search to help deliver a fivefold increase in criminal prosecutions for tax evasion.
