Stamp Duty Dodge – Solicitor Sentenced

A Leeds based solicitor was jailed today for tax fraud after fiddling his VAT returns and his clients’ conveyancing documents.

Timothy Thomas Rogers (aged 35 from Knottingley, West Yorkshire), ran Rogers & Co Solicitors in Leeds.  He charged his clients the full amount of Stamp Duty due to HMRC; but then on 8 different property purchases he altered the conveyancing forms – fraudulently reducing the Stamp Duty shown, and pocketing the £133K difference.  The forms sent to the Land Registry showed the true figures.  HM Revenue and Customs spotted the discrepancies.  They then found that Rogers had also submitted false VAT refund claims of £79K.

Rogers was found guilty of 2 counts of Cheating the Public Revenue, and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

HMRC said: “Today’s sentence should serve as a reminder to those who hold positions of trust that the justice system takes a firm line on those who fall foul of the law.”
