Tax Cheating Chelsea Tailors Convicted

A father and daughter who ran a tailors’ business in upmarket Chelsea have been convicted for tax fiddles worth £700,000.

Tosca Tossoun and his daughter Tanya Halil ran “Tosca & Daughters Tailors” on Chelsea’s fashionable Lower Sloane Street. Over a three-year period they did not pay any Corporation Tax, or PAYE, or file any Self-Assessment returns – evading more than £400,000 in Income Tax.  They charged their customers £294,925 VAT, but didn’t pay it across to HM Revenue and Customs.

HMRC tax investigators proved that the money was used to fund their lifestyles; including paying rents of £4,000 a month on their homes (in Wandsworth), and private school fees of £30,000 a year.  Forensic analysis of their financial records showed that £350,000 was transferred into Halil’s bank account from the business in that period.

Tosca Tossoun (aged 65), admitted tax fraud and was sentenced to 27 months in prison, and ordered to pay costs of £1,000.  His daughter Tanya Halil (aged 42), was convicted after a trial.  She got off more lightly with: a suspended jail sentence (of 2 years); 120 hours of unpaid work; and must pay costs of £5,000. HMRC have started proceedings to attempt to recover the Proceeds Of Crime.
