Tax Fiddling Female Construction Boss Jailed

The female director of a building firm has been jailed for two years after a tax investigation proved she falsified the business expense claims: leading to a £275,000 VAT fraud.

When the taxman examined the business records in detail they realised that Avril Jane Elliott (aged 49, from Brunstane in Edinburgh) had wildly overstated her business expenses: leading to over-repayments of VAT of £275,000.  She pleaded guilty to being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of Value Added Tax contrary to the Value Added Tax Act 1994 – by submitting a series of false VAT returns from 2008 to 2013.  She was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on 25 August 2015.

HMRC have started Confiscation Proceedings under the Proceeds Of Crime Act to recover the money.
