Tax Prosecution Team merges with CPS

The taxman’s Revenue and Customs Prosecution Office (RCPO) merged with The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on 1st January 2010.

HMRC conducts the criminal investigations into tax fraud, and then hands cases over to another government agency to consider if prosecution is suitable. Until 1st January the RCPO made the crucial decisions.  Now it will be the CPS (in England and Wales).

There is a new Revenue and Customs Division within the CPS, led by David Green QC. That unit has legal beagles in both London and Manchester and provides specialist prosecution services to HMRC.

There is also now an enhanced Proceeds of Crime Unit (dealing with asset recovery) which goes after the money following a conviction.
