Taxman aims to prosecute 800 people next year

Criminal prosecutions for tax fraud could rise to 800 a year.  The Treasury is funding a fivefold increase in HMRC criminal prosecutions through a £900m boost to the taxman’s budget to the fight tax evasion.

HMRC prosecuted 157 individuals for tax evasion in the year ending 30 September 2009.

It is widely believed that a large number of these will stem from the vast data the taxman now has about offshore bank accounts.
