Whistleblower: on HMRC Bonus Culture: “Taxmen cheat businesses for more pay”!

A whistle-blowing tax inspector told an employment tribunal that businesses were being deliberately overtaxed so his colleagues could earn bonuses; according to the Oxford Mail.

The 55-year-old tax inspector, Alan Curtis, said his fellow tax inspectors unfairly charged traders too much tax – to make it look as if they had successfully solved cases, so as to boost their performance related pay.  Mr Curtis had worked for HMRC since 1979.  He claimed “hundreds of thousands of pounds” had been wrongly wrung out of businessmen in tax investigations.  Mr Curtis said he had taken his concerns to management in HMRC, but believed his speaking out led to him being victimised by his co-workers.
