A South Yorkshire businessman who confessed to a £1 million VAT fraud has been jailed for 3 years.
Gwynn Williams (aged 61) from Chapeltown in Sheffield was the director of Hallmark Blades, which traded in surgical equipment. He had faked transactions in order to submit false VAT refund claims through his business. He became worried after HMRC contacted him to arrange a VAT inspection. He delayed the visit numerous times, and tried to scale down his claims in order to avoid detection. When the tax investigation officers finally arrived to interview Williams he presented them with a confession and a schedule of the false VAT refund claims – totalling around £1 million. At the fraud’s peak Williams was fraudulently claiming VAT repayments of almost £30,000 a month. He was arrested by HMRC officers in September 2011 and later charged with tax fraud. He pleaded guilty in November 2012 at Sheffield Crown Court and was sentenced today to 3 years in prison and disqualified from being a company director for 7 years.
